Before the big food chain stores moved in and showed up everywhere, Baltimore had small corner stores for folks to buy groceries. Sure , there were the markets ( See Kilduffs Market page ), but when someone just needed a few items, it was the corner store that met the need. The store seen above was located in the 3100 block of St Paul Street , and the image below shows the inside of that store, circa the 1930's. ....................................................

Just above the entrance way to a Laundromat at Monroe and Lafayette. Asked about this one, and people responded. Apparently a clothing store from " years back " |

East Baltimore. The other small store can be found just off of Division
Street in West Baltimore. Below, a 1901 ad for the Cushing and

The Baltimore corner
store. For years they could be found open all over the City. Many
have closed up, and still others have been bought out and are now
liquor stores or corner carry outs. Below, a 1957 ad for Southern

| A store stands alone in Westport, South
Baltimore. It appears to have once been a neighborhood store, now
a liquor store. In North Baltimore, on Harford Road, a very
small " Variety Stop" appears closed up. An ad ( below ) from the 1923 Goucher
College yearbook , Donnybrook Fair for the nearby ( at the time )
Chelsea Pharmacy. ......................................................... |
