.......The Baltimore Commercial Bank, above right , was located  in downtown Baltimore City. Many of Baltimore's early banks ( 1900's circa ) were located along Howard and Eutaw Street, in the general area of Lexington Street.  Early banks started out as smaller businesses and would later branch out with one or two offices in other downtown locations.

Banks were also found in Baltimore's business district, with at least one survivor , the old Savings Bank of Baltimore Building. It's no  longer a bank, but is still used as offices. You could find branch offices of the Savings Bank of Baltimore at 5114 Park Heights Avenue, Loch Raven and Northern  Parkway, Harundale , Arbutus, and Westview.

Before the era of plexiglas and bulletproof glass,  banks would have lobbies and customer service areas that let you know your money was in a secure place. The trend for the security seems to be turning back too, once again allowing customers a face to face transaction with tellers, although you will still find plenty of banks with all the safety features still in place. The interiors seen in these photos date back to the 1950's. Photos  - Courtesy of the Baltimore Gas and Electric Collection at the Baltimore Museum of Industry

......As Baltimore grew in the 1910's, Baltimore's banking grew and changed with it. While a good central bank was important in the downtown area, more branch offices were beginning to open up all over town. Other banks skipped the downtown branch all together , opening up banks under various names all over the City, to serve the various neighborhoods.

....Best known as the " Walbrook Bank"  this old building may have opened under the name Chesapeake Bank . The building is in the Walbrook Junction section of Baltimore City, in the 3200 block of West North Avenue. In the 1960's, the bank was operated by Union Trust Bank , and as the entire area has undergone many changes over the past 100 years,  this bank building continues to be used by a bank, as seen in the photo above.

Frederick Road and the Irvington neighborhood have plenty of history. The old Irvington street car garage, and the Irvington Theatre, just to name a few. I'm not sure what the building is being used for these days.

Hmmmmmmm.  I could use some help here. I have some information on these buildings, but need more before these go into the correct sections as banks. Any information on these buildings, or any others on this page, or some I missed , and I'm sure there are plenty, would be greatly appreciated !

Old
                  bank west Baltimore
This might have been an old bank, I'm not sure the history, or why someone decided to save the facade of this old building on West Baltimore Street, a few blocks  to the West of downtown.

The mystery deepens, as a emailer was kind enough to send a picture of Baltimore Street around 1920 and it almost seems to have been a garage or firehouse. I'm beginning to suspect it was a garage for a coal company.

This one has me stumped, is it an old bank ? This 1920's style building, on the southeast corner of North Avenue and Maryland Avenue is a odd looking addition to the buildings in the block.

........This old building can be found on Reisterstown Road, just north of Belvedere. Used for years as a animal hospital, I have a feeling, by the style of the front of the building, that it was once a bank. I'm still researching this one.

..................East Baltimore bank
.............
Located on East Baltimore Street, I have been told it was once a bank, any ideas which one ? The old clock has long since been removed and the building is a store to this day, although the stained glass windows are still intact ! I heard from one emailer who believes this may have been a Midstate Savings and Loan office.

The building above, on East Madison Street , looks like it once used as a bank. Any ideas ? To the above right, a old bank building currently used as a church on West North Avenue.
