..................................................................................... ............................... In our quest of Baltimore History, Kilduff's realized we had to do a page on Baltimore Beer . We are missing a lot and ANY help, suggestions, comments, would be greatly appreciated !!! Baltimore has quite a history when it comes to making beer, with over 100 old breweries in the City's past. The best remaining example of that history is the old American Brewery Building on North Gay Street. I remember first seeing the building in the early 1980's from a distance, and when I finally pulled in front of the building, I was amazed to see such a wild old building still standing in Baltimore. The building is in a area of Baltimore not considered too safe these days, and with property values not high in the area, the building has escaped the " let's tear it down " attention so many other buildings in Baltimore have gotten over the years. |

| ....In East Baltimore City and
visible from all over the City, is the American Brewery Building . The building
was built in 1863, and rebuilt in 1887, by John Frederick Wiessner. For many
years it was abandoned, the plans to convert the building into
the Baltimore Headquarters for Humanim worked out and the building looks
great today , opening in April 2009 . Below left, a interior
photo shows the machinery inside the brewery
, circa the 1930's. The other photos below show the building
as it looked for years , vacant but in good condition
on the outside. Driving past the
old brewery today, it is incredible to see the change and promise
in this old building ! |

a American Brewery ad ( AKA The John F. Wiessner & Sons Brewing
Company ) circa the early 1900's. Much of the complex is gone, but the
centerpiece building still stands on North Gay Street. To the below
right, an ad by Fred Bauernschmidt for Keg Customers,
circa 1914. Below, a few of the labels used over
the years. The tall center tower once housed a grain elevator.
Prohibition in the 1920's closed the plant, but it later reopened,
later bought out by the American Malt Company, and then later Alleghany
Beverage Company, who made American Beer into the 1950's. |

| Arrow Beer Globe Brewery 327 South Hanover Street Baltimore Maryland Arrow Beer was produced by the Globe Brewery Company in Baltimore. To the right, a Arrow " Bock Beer " label , and below, the label for "Arrow Premium Beer " .. On the right below, a ad from around 1914, for a Arrow Beer " Kaiser Roof Garden " , which might have been located at the corner of Madison Avenue and West North Avenue. I have a feeling as World War I came in to place, the Kaiser Roof Garden either closed or changed the name. The site of the old Globe Brewery has long since been built over in the development of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. ... |

| In South Baltimore, is the Pabst Brewing
Building on South Charles Street. The building has
been there for years, and seems to get more attention on this
page than any other company. It appears to have been a bottling
factory, and was active all the way back to before a 1914 insurance
map I found and I'm sure it's history dates back even further than that. ...............................................................

out as a survey of Baltimore Movie Theatre Buildings, circa
1900-1950. We have since moved on to other styles
of buildings around Baltimore. This is always
a " work in progress " , and as the information comes in ,
it will be posted. .....See More Kilduffs here :.....
